Card Combinations

As a
general rule, lead a small card when taking a finesse. Do not lead a high card
unless you can afford to expend two honour cards to capture one.
Lead a small card towards honours. If holding two honours in
one hand, try to lead towards them twice.
A Q 10 4 |
Lead
the two and finesse the 10. If it wins, return to hand and lead the 3
intending to finesse the Queen. This gains if LHO holds Kx |
J 3 2 |
A K J 4 |
Lead
the Ace (or play the 2 to the Ace). Return to hand and lead the 3 to finesse
the Jack. |
10 3 2 |
K Q J 5 |
Lead
towards the Jack. If it wins, return to hand and lead to the Queen. If this
holds, return to hand again and lead to the King. |
4 3 2 |
Q J 5 4 |
Lead towards the J. If this wins, return to hand and lead to the Q.

the honours may be changed e.g. Qxx opposite KJxx |
K 3 2 |
Q J 5 4 |
First cash the A, then lead to the Q. If this holds, return to hand and lead
to the J. This gives the best chance of 3 tricks in the suit. |
A 3 2 |
A 10 5 4 |
If
you can establish which hand is most likely to hold a doubleton, then lead a
small card through him, playing for split honours. |
J 3 2 |
K J 5 4 |
Lead
the 2 and finesse the Jack. If it wins, return to hand and lead low again. |
10 3 2 |
A J 10 |
Lead
the Queen and run it. If it wins, the lead remains in your hand for a second
finesse. |
Q 3 2 |
A J 10 2 |
Run
the 9 first, then run the Queen. The lead then remains in your hand for a
third finesse if necessary. |
Q 9 3 |
A Q 9 |
Lead
the 2 and finesse the 9. * Later lead the 3 to finesse the Queen.
* if LHO plays the J or 10, cover with the Q and later finesse the 9. |
4 3 2 |
A J 9 |
Lead
small and finesse the 9. If this draws a high honour, later lead small and
finesse the Jack. |
4 3 2 |
K 10 9 |
Lead
small and finesse the 9. Later lead low and finesse the 10. |
4 3 2 |
Q 4 3 |
Lead
the 2 to the Queen. Whether or not this wins, you later lead the 3 to the
10. |
K 10 2 |
J 4 3 |
Lead
the 2 to the Jack. Later lead the 3 and finesse the 9. |
Q 9 2 |
Q 7 5 3 |
Lead
low from either hand (through the player who is more likely to hold the
doubleton if this can be established). If this wins, play low from both
hands next round. |
K 6 4 2 |
