1 Day Course Content

The 1NT Battlefield: better bidding after a 1 No Trump Opening Bid

This will include a detailed examination of Stayman and Transfer Responses to 1NT. We shall also consider ways of dealing with the opponents’ interference after partner’s 1NT opening bid – even a simple overcall at the 2-level can upset our bidding if we are insufficiently prepared. There will be a series of prepared hands to play covering each of these areas.

The 1NT opening bid occurs so often that it pays to be prepared and make the most of every occasion.

Slam Bidding: making the most of the big hands

Most players are familiar with Blackwood, but this seminar will provide you with more efficient (and more enjoyable) weapons in the hunt for those slam bonuses. Cue-bidding, splinter bids and Roman Key Card Blackwood (the experts’ tools in slam bidding) will be explained, and then prepared hands will give you the chance to put your new expertise into practice.

Instead of dreading the big hands, fearing that you will either bid too many and go down or err on the cautious side and miss a slam, you will now positively look forward to them.

Opening Leads

There’s good news, and bad news, and worse news!

The good news is that, as the opening leader you get to fire the first shot in the battle to make or break a contract, and it could give your side a critical advantage.

The bad news is that you might select the wrong lead, presenting declarer with a trick (or even a contract) that he could not otherwise make.

The worse news is that whole books have been written about opening leads.

However, the principles of consistently selecting good opening leads can be learned. If you would like to become a better leader – and thus defeat more contracts – then this day-course is for you.  As well as examining how to select which suit to lead, the choice of card will also be considered. Both at no trumps and in a suit contract your opening lead will improve – and so will your results.

Improve Your Bridge: Useful Conventions

Three useful additions to the bridge player’s bidding weaponry are examined: Transfer Bids, Michaels Cue Bids (plus the Unusual No Trump) and Lebensohl. Each topic will be discussed and then prepared hands will be played to ensure that the themes are understood. This is your chance to learn to bid like the experts.
